Dem Consultant Sheinkopf: Grimes Committed Political Suicide

By    |   Tuesday, 14 October 2014 08:04 PM

Alison Lundergan Grimes blew her chances in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race by bizarrely refusing to answer over and over again whether she voted for President Barack Obama, veteran Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf says.

Grimes, who hopes to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, got word on Tuesday that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has stopped running TV ads for her.

"It's a close race and these gaffes can put you into trouble and out of the field," Sheinkopf said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Why spend millions of dollars where they can be spent somewhere else? It's a smart business decision by the DSCC."

Sheinkopf, president of Sheinkopf Communications and a Newsmax contributor, said Grimes should have answered the question without pussyfooting around.

"I would've said the following: Yes, I made a mistake, or yes, it's great, look at the number of people in Kentucky receiving additional health benefits because Obama was the president.

"Either way, those are the two good answers. But she chose a different route, which was right off the cliff."

Sheinkopf agreed with host Steve Malzberg that Democrats should be worried about the GOP's recapturing the Senate because of the lack of substantial issues they've put forward.

"There's no new Democratic argument. The last thing the Democrats did that was new was enact the New Deal. There's nothing new going on here," Sheinkopf said.

"You can't have a discussion about Social Security, that's resolved. You can't have a discussion about women's reproductive freedom, that's been resolved.

"You can't even have a discussion about same-sex marriages, that's largely been resolved by the courts. Guess what? They got nothing to talk about, and they have a president who people don't want to be around."

Sheinkopf says the federal government has failed to give Americans a sense of security against the Ebola crisis and the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS).

"We're suffering from the exact opposite of what we should be enjoying, which is a government that spends all of its time protecting Americans, rather than a government that blames Americans and seeks to put them in harm's way," he said.

"There is something wrong with this. The failing to deal with ISIS and Syria at the time when it was appropriate to do so, to stand up to the Russians . . . to honor our commitments to Poland and the Ukraine, which would've set the stage very differently."
