Fifty-eight percent of voters support the U.S.-led airstrikes against the Syrian government, while 23 percent oppose them, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Nineteen percent of those polled had no opinion on the airstrikes.
Here is how the survey breaks down:
- 77 percent of Republicans support the airstrikes, compared to 9 percent who oppose them.
- 49 percent of Democrats back the military action, while 32 percent do not.
- 49 percent of independents support the strikes, compared to 26 percent who oppose them.
- 30 percent are confident the airstrikes will prevent the Syrian government from using chemical or biological weapons again and 57 percent are not.
- 26 percent say controversies surrounding President Donald Trump played a major factor in his decision to launch the airstrikes.
- 18 percent say the controversies played a minor factor.
- 34 percent said the controversies were not a factor at all.
- 41 percent approve of the job Trump is doing as president, compared to 55 percent who disapprove.
"Democrats and Republicans have drastically different views on whether ongoing scandals played a role in President Trump's decision to conduct airstrikes in Syria," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult's co-founder.
"Notably, 65 percent of Democrats say the president's recent controversies were a major or minor factor in his decision to conduct airstrikes, compared with only 28 percent of Republicans."
The poll, conducted April 13-16, surveyed 1,995 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
