Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Sunday Congress should consider making it a crime to seek election help from a foreign government.

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Schiff also defended former Vice President Joe Biden amid criticism for his reported 2016 role in Ukraine while his son Hunter was working for a company owned by an Ukrainian oligarch.

There's no evidence that [Joe Biden] was doing anything but trying to get the Ukraine to crack down on corruption,” in his dealings with Ukraine in 2016, Schiff asserted. “We want them to be successful in its conflict with Russia. They've had an endemic corruption problem. That's what Joe Biden was trying to address.”

He said criticism by President Donald Trump and his allies of Hunter Biden is meant to sting the former vice president’s 2020 presidential bid.

“Going after his son is just a method of going after someone the president believes is his most formidable opponent,” Schiff said.

“Let the president go after him but don't seek the help of a foreign government in your election,” he added. “If this isn't criminal and [special counsel] Bob Mueller said he could not prove all the elements of a crime, then maybe we need to change the elements of that crime because we cannot make this the new norm, that if you can't win an election on your own, it's fine to seek help from a foreign power.
