As Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary, one question still lands like a punchline: Who would start a technology company and name it after a fruit? And how could an entity with such a silly name have such massive impact — good, bad, and in between — even on culture and politics?

What began on April 1, 1976 in a garage in Los Altos, California, with Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne has become a $3.7 trillion colossus whose flagship product sits in more than half of American pockets.
