New Jersey is already considered to be among the states with the toughest gun laws, but Gov. Chris Christie thinks they can be stronger.
Christie proposes adding mental-health records to instant background checks and wants bigger penalties for selling firearms to convicted felons, owning a gun with the intent to unlawfully transfer it and illegally owning ammunition and in trafficking firearms.

Christie noted that New Jersey already has a ban on military-style weapons, a seven-day waiting period, the third-strictest laws on magazine capacity and a one-gun-a-month law.
“Ensuring there are common-sense safety measures when purchasing guns is not enough,”
Salon reported Christie as saying. “We must address the many different contributing factors.”
