Washington Examiner's York: GOP Plan Could Replace Obamacare

By    |   Friday, 13 December 2013 06:19 PM EST

Republican lawmakers are quietly getting behind a health plan that could replace the Affordable Care Act, according to Byron York, chief political correspondent of the Washington Examiner.

"Democrats say this all the time, 'look, Republicans don't have any plan, they just want to go back to the status quo, there's no reason to listen to them,'" York told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

He said the Republican Study Committee has written a bill — HR 3121 — with "basic Republican healthcare prescriptions," including buying insurance across state lines, high risk pools for people with preexisting conditions and medical malpractice reform.

"It repeals Obamacare and it's a bill that most Republicans probably could support. There's 117 cosponsors of it right now, that's a bare majority of the Republicans in the House," York said.

"Democrats have already scoffed at this. They said, oh, that's the same old, same old, nothing new there. But the thing is, the healthcare debate has changed because of the ongoing failures of Obamacare.

"A lot of Republican strategists believe, I believe they're correct, the public would really like to hear what the Republicans have to suggest about fixing this problem that apparently is just getting worse."

York said that the nation may soon see some shocking figures surrounding the healthcare law.

"We could have a really just a stunning situation come January which is there could be more people who have lost their health coverage under Obamacare than have gained it," he said.

"Now, that was completely defeating the purpose of the Affordable Care Act. It would be a stunning failure and it seems to me Republicans have to be able to say, look, this is not working and it's going to get worse; here's what we ought to do."
