Tea Party Leader: We Need Alternate Plan for Immigration Reform

By    |   Tuesday, 20 May 2014 04:29 PM EDT

Tea party lawmakers must join together on Capitol Hill to embrace immigration reform, says Sal Russo, president and founder of the Tea Party Express.

"Conservative tea party leaders … in the House and Senate, ought to put together an alternative to what we commonly hear being discussed in terms of immigration reform," Russo told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We always say, we like tea party members of Congress to be leaders, and my fear is that if conservatives don't lead, we have one of two choices.''

Story continues below video.

One, he says, is the current system, which "basically is de facto amnesty where people have a shiny magnet that attracts them to the U.S. to get a job, healthcare, and education for their children."

The other is that Republicans "get ramrodded in the buying into something like the Gang of 8 bill, which perpetuates some of the same things that are wrong with our current law.''

Russo urged the tea party to work with lawmakers like U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to hammer out a "conservative alternative."

"One of the things that makes conservatives so angry and frustrated is that we don't enforce the current immigration laws … but I'm saying, don't be mad let's come up with our solution," he said.
