NFL's Demps Starts Christian Music Label to Counter Gangsta Rap

By    |   Wednesday, 19 March 2014 04:11 PM EDT

Famed football safety Quintin Demps, who recently joined the New York Giants, has launched a new Christian music label to counter the harmful ideas promoted by gangsta rap.

"Music kind of raised me. I didn't have a father figure, I didn't have any really positive male influence in my life. So music kind of raised me," Demps told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

But "the things I heard were kind of harmful … It made me feel like money, cars, and clothes were what life was about.

"It made me feel like women were not equal to men … [that] you're supposed to treat women like dogs ... We're not better than them."

So Demps decided to promote artists who promote positive, life-affirming ideas with a new label, Purpose by Faith.

"I want to put hope into somebody's life, I want to put inspiration, I want to be positive, and I want to give a message of just hope … It's just something I'm passionate about," he said.

He said rappers who spout negatives "know better than that. They shouldn't want to lead somebody that way because I'm sure a lot of them been that way, and there's nothing there.

"I would just tell them that that's false, that's not right. It goes against everything I believe, and I believe everything in the Bible."

Demps, who weighs in at 208 pounds and previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Hartford Colonials, Houston Texans, and Kansas City Chiefs, believes the Giants, which finished last season 7-9, are headed for a championship.

"That's really what pulled me in [for]. They're contenders. They're not rebuilding, they're trying to win now. So that was important to me," he said.
