The Affordable Care Act should not decide who gets treatment and who doesn't with "death panels," says Michael Cannon, the Cato Institute's director of Health Policy Studies.
"Nasty disputes in the public square over whether coverage should be denied for this or for that, this is not something the government should be doing at all," Cannon told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"If the government is going to be subsidizing healthcare for people . . . give seniors a bigger check if they're sick or if they have low incomes so they can afford a basic package with benefits," he said Monday.
"But then let them decide how to spend it. Don't let the government get into the business of deciding who gets what treatment and who doesn't, because there's no right answer to that question. The answers are going to depend on individual values."
Cannon said the problem with the new healthcare law is not that healthcare is being rationed, but that it is being managed by a board of unelected bureaucrats.
"[They] will be able to write laws that Congress itself would not have passed and would like to block but cannot," he said.
