Mary Matalin: Republicans Must Be 'Loud and Proud' About Ideology

By    |   Friday, 17 January 2014 06:44 PM EST

Veteran political consultant Mary Matalin says Republicans must be more willing to speak out and support their party's true ideology.

"I don't know why Republicans can't be more clear-throated, more loud and proud about the [Rep. Paul] Ryan plan for healthcare reform," Matalin told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Or health savings accounts or associated healthcare plans or innovation or tort reform or the myriad pieces that go into this very complicated structural debt reform that needs to happen."

Story continues below video.

Matalin, who with her husband, James Carville, authored the new book, "Love & War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home," says the GOP has a problem expressing itself.

"Here's what Republicans do, and I've learned this over 30 years of doing it. You spend so much time defending positions you don't hold that you don't get around to giving the position that you do hold," she said.

"So you should — there's a way to do a quick eye-rolling, [meaning] that's a lie, you were the ones who blah, blah, blah, and here's our position."

She added that reform in Washington is definitely needed.

"We're not going to be the same country. Was it this week … we fell off the top 10 most liberty-free economies in the world?"

Matalin served under three presidents: Ronald Reagan; George H.W. Bush, for whom she was campaign director; and George W. Bush, whom she served as an assistant.
