Lauren Fix: GM Still Has Work to Do to Overcome Lethal Defect

By    |   Wednesday, 11 June 2014 10:43 PM EDT

General Motors "set a great example" by firing 15 higher-ups tied to lethally defective ignition switches in its vehicles, but new CEO Mary Barra may have more in-house purging to do to get GM back on track, automotive writer Lauren Fix told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

Between GM's famously slow-moving corporate culture and reports that even more fatalities might be blamed on the faulty switches, the storied car company is still mired in its first major crisis since the Obama adminstration rescued it from insolvency, Fix told "Midpoint" host Ed Berliner.

Story continues below video.

Fix kicked off the inaugural edition of "Automotive Block," a weekly segment on "Midpoint," about the automotive industry and America's love affair with cars.

Fix said the extent of the bailed-out automaker's troubles may still not be fully known, even to people like Barra.

But she credited the new chief for trying to get out in front of the ignition switch debacle and trusting the public with its findings by releasing an unflattering 325-page investigative report.

"I would rather have them be proactive now than finding out when it's too late," Fix said.
