Kristol: Obamacare Intrusion 'Galling'

By    |   Tuesday, 03 December 2013 11:11 AM EST

Americans are '"galled" by the federal government's intrusion into the affairs of their personal healthcare, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said Tuesday.

"Think about education. We help with Pell grants. We have public universities. But, we don't tell individuals, 'If you want to go X College or Y University, and use your own money to pay for the curriculum you like, then you can't do it,' " Kristol told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"That's what really galls people about Obamacare."

Kristol maintained people do not object to paying higher taxes for programs to help others less fortunate, such as Medicare. The issue, he said, comes when the government dictates what product a person can purchase.

Story continues below video.

"Very rarely is a program intrusive or coercive the way this one is. The way to do this, in the tradition of Medicare, is raise taxes on people and help poor people purchase health insurance. "

It is not for the government to "tell people who have their own health insurance and are happy with it, 'You have to go into these exchanges. You have to buy this kind of health insurance,'" Kristol said.

People will be "dragged into the exchanges" to purchase health insurance they may not want because of the need to be covered under a healthcare plan, Kristol said.

"A lot of people will be saying, 'I don't like paying higher prices, I don't like the plan I'm forced to get. But, I'm not going to go without health insurance next year. I'll go into the exchanges.'"
