Mediaite's Concha: Racist Gaffes May Be Age Over Politics

Wednesday, 30 April 2014 03:20 PM EDT

The racial uproars involving Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may have more to do with age than politics, according to Joe Concha, a columnist for Mediaite.com.

"Bundy’s probably conservative based on his beliefs. Sterling donated to Democrats, but he's apparently a registered Republican, and Reid may or may not be a Democrat," Concha told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"So I'm starting to think, alright, should we start taking these stories and basically line it up with a political party, or is just a bunch of old guys who were raised in a different generation?"

Are they from a "different era and just don't quite know better than younger people who are more sensitive to race?"

Story continues below video.

Sterling was banned for life from the NBA for ranting that his girlfriend shouldn't bring black people to games. Bundy wondered if African Americans might not be better off as slaves. And in 2010, Reid described Barack Obama as a "light-skinned" African American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

"Sterling’s 80, Bundy is obviously in his 60s, Reid is obviously in his 60s," Concha said, adding that of the three Reid "was given a pass" and allowed to continue as a lawmaker.

"Reid didn't have to resign, didn't have to do anything.... Why does he get a pass?.... I can honestly not answer that.

"Now I can say, alright, it's media bias, and they want to give him a pass, but I can't believe that if you use the word 'negro' in any capacity, I don't care what party you are, that … there isn't more of a backlash."
