Israeli Official: US Should Place Limits on Efforts With Iran

By    |   Tuesday, 01 October 2013 06:15 PM EDT

The United States should put a time limit on its diplomatic efforts with Iran on the issue of nuclear weapons, says Danny Danon, Israel's deputy secretary of defense.

"The U.S. … should continue with the diplomacy, but they should put a timeline [on it]," Danon told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"A point where we have to reach a decision whether they are playing or they really want to end the nuclear race," he told Malzberg on Tuesday.

Story continues below video.

Israelis are suspicious of Iran's peace-making overtures. Last month, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a U.N. speech that the United States and Iran could hopefully "arrive at a framework to manage our differences."

Last week, Rouhani spoke by phone with President Barack Obama — the first time the leaders of the two nations had spoken since 1979.

"We are skeptical, and you know, every fall we see the Iranians are coming to New York City, delivering a speech, but what happens in between? So, we will follow very carefully what will happen in Iran," Danon said.

So far, he said, Iran is "playing with the world, it's playing with the U.S. Rouhani himself said, 'Allow me to play with the U.S. I know how to trick them, I know how to play with them.'"
