Washington Examiner's York: Most Hispanics Vote With Democrats

Thursday, 17 April 2014 06:55 PM EDT

Republicans stand to lose if they go along with a plan for increased amnesty for illegal immigrants, according to Byron York, chief political correspondent for The Washington Examiner.

"Hispanic immigrants … [are] essentially socialized into American politics in Democratic environments," York told "The Steve Malzberg Show" Thursday on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"The question is whether to increase that number as the Gang of Eight plan passed by the Senate last year would do.

"I don't doubt that Democrats strongly believe in the policy they're espousing but … [it] just happens to politically benefit them."

York said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush "didn't really make any friends" when he called the illegal entry of immigrants into the United States an "act of love."

But he added that the GOP is muddled on where it stands on immigration.

"The Republican Party is very divided on this question of immigration reform. I would say the Republican base is strongly against it," he said.

"But the Republican donor class, the kind of people that Jeb Bush would be appealing to as he starts up a race, if he does so — they're very much in favor of it."
