Newsday's Henican: NBA Will Force Sterling Out for Money Reasons

Monday, 28 April 2014 06:42 PM EDT

Donald Sterling will be ousted as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers because the National Basketball Association stands to lose millions of dollars if it doesn't act against the racist remarks he purportedly made, Newsday columnist Ellis Henican says.

"Since government isn't involved in this, it's an economic decision," Henican told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"To me, he's going to get dumped. Not because he did anything illegal, not because he didn't have a right to be stupid, which I guess we all do on some level.

"But he violates the economic interest of the NBA, and they will find a way to hustle his butt right out the door," Henican said Monday.

Story continues below video.

According to website TMZ.com, Sterling told his girlfriend he didn't want her to bring black people to his games after she posted a photo of herself with Hall-of-Famer Magic Johnson on Instagram.

Asked by Malzberg why comic Bill Maher, who owns a small stake in the New York Mets, wasn't tossed from the team after making obscene comments about Sarah Palin and other Republicans, Henican said:

"Believe me, the minute the Wilpon family [owners of the Mets] thinks that Bill Maher is a detriment to their financial interests, he'll be out of there as fast as this guy."
