Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., wasn't satisfied with what he called conflicting testimony on the Benghazi attack behind closed doors this week.
Five current CIA operatives or contractors testified in classified hearings held by the House Intelligence Committee on the attack that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead on Sept. 11, 2012.
Nunes told Fox News Channel's
"Special Report" that there were discrepancies with the White House version of events, including whether support was called in from a State Department counterterrorism team and from the air.
He also noted that previous reports have suggested there was a lull between the initial attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound and on the later attack on the CIA annex.
"There is conflicting testimony, and I will tell you this, that I believe the survivors," Nunes said. "I don't think it ever stopped."
That raises questions about why help was never sent, he said. Nunes told host Chris Wallace that he does not have a satisfactory answer.
Nunes sent a
letter to House Speaker John Boehner on Nov. 6 with nine questions he said need to be answered by the White House. Otherwise, he said, a special prosecutor should be appointed.
Nunes also said he is offended by the reported treatment of witnesses, whom he believes have been subjected to polygraph tests on whether they have talked to Congress and have been forced to sign nondisclosure forms
"These guys are American heroes, and they should be treated that way," Nunes said. "If it wasn't for them, almost everyone would have been killed."
