The United States is on the fast track to a disastrous future, thanks in part to the Obama administration, acclaimed Canadian poet and essayist David Solway says.
"America is screwed. The fractures run too deep, the divisions are too great, the abyss is too profound; the hatred, the misunderstanding, the misuse of language, the entire sort of racial debacle that is going on which need never have happened — at least not in modern times — at least not since the civil rights movement," Solway told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
Story continues below video.
"All this, as well as, of course, Republicans and Democrats and the possibility of a third party and so on — the divisions run so deep that they're tectonic. I don't think you can recover."
Solway, a member of the Jubilate Circle and a former teacher of English Literature at John Abbott College, believes the United States was once "at the pinnacle of the world," and was a "worldly success, worldly power."
That power is now gone, lamented Solway, who blames the current administration for much of the nation's woes.
"I've written several times that the greatest enemy the United States has to face is not Vladimir Putin, it's not the Chinese emperor, it's not [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, it is Barack Obama," he said.
"I don't know where he comes from, I don't know what his real underlying agenda is. I have some suspicions, as other people do."
