Dr. Samadi: Don't Take Antibiotics Unless Absolutely Necessary

By    |   Friday, 07 March 2014 06:08 PM EST

Superbugs are on the rise thanks to the overuse of antibiotics, according Dr. David Samadi, Chairman of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

"Over the years, these bugs, or superbugs, [have] really learned how to become resistant and … they're resistant to some of the antibiotics that we have," Samadi told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We have been overusing antibiotics and, unfortunately, we are paying the price."

Story continues below video.

Samadi urges people to carefully question their doctors whenever an antibiotic is prescribed.

"Next time someone gives you a prescription for antibiotics, ask your doctor, 'do I really need it?''' he said.

Samadi also said many hospitals, like Lenox Hill, are starting to do more to stop the spread of infection among patients.

"At Lenox Hill … I basically took a wing of the hospital and created a whole new floor for urology patients. Every patient, they have their own suite or they have their own really beautiful rooms so the risk of infection now has gone practically down to zero," he said.

"[And] if someone has [a] real difficult infection, really get them to the whole different side of the hospital [so they] are not infecting other people.''
