The search for the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 has become so fruitless that the biggest news development Friday morning in the ongoing story is
a Twitter battle between MSNBC and CNN about the use of the term "breaking news."
MSNBC anchor and correspondent Chuck Todd took a thinly veiled shot at CNN earlier this week, mocking the Atlanta-based cable news network for its virtually nonstop coverage of the search, regardless of the absence of any meaningful developments.
Todd took it a step further, saying his program, "The Daily Rundown," only used the "breaking news" banner when there was actually breaking news.
CNN fired back, courtesy of producer Vaughn Sterling, with a screen grab from MSNBC's "Politics Nation" caught in the act of claiming 'breaking news' without presenting any actual news developments.
That seemed to be the end of it, but the bickering found new life Friday morning when Todd returned to Twitter with another salvo.
He followed that up 15 minutes later defending his own work in cable news.
Todd capped his tweeting with a warning about the perils of sensationalizing news.
Sterling took umbrage once again, offering even more damning evidence of MSNBC doing precisely what Todd criticized.
Then he followed with a tweet of Todd's own show doing what he had previously said it was above doing.
Todd did not immediately respond.
