Charles Hurt: Obama Used Prisoner Swap to Rile Conservatives

Wednesday, 04 June 2014 07:39 PM EDT

There's likely a "nefarious" reason behind the Obama administration's swap of five Taliban terrorists for an Army sergeant: to create political chaos, Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt says.

Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV that the fact that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is now being accused of being a deserter makes the trade even more mysterious

"How they could not have known his history is staggering to me. The best-case scenario is they're just totally ignorant,'' he said Wednesday.

Story continues below video.

"I honestly believe," Hurt said, "it had to have been something a whole lot more nefarious, where they knew it and knew by trumping him up as some sort of war hero and releasing him in exchange for five dangerous terrorists . . . that people on the right . . . their heads would explode.

"And they would immediately be like, how in the world could something like this happen? It's the whole divide your enemy and have these squabbles amongst themselves.

"That's what this administration has come to, that's their tactic every day is how can we drive you crazy? It's insane and it's a lack of leadership and it suggests that these people are tyrannical at levels that we've never seen before.''
