Columnist Charles Hurt: Americans Should be Thankful for George Mason

By    |   Wednesday, 27 November 2013 06:33 PM EST

There are a lot of well-known heroes the nation gives thanks for on Thanksgiving, but one of  the unsung ones is George Mason, according to Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt.

Mason was an American patriot, a Virginia delegate, and along with James Madison, is the "Father of the United States Bill of Rights" — and is often sadly forgotten.

"We talk so much about freedom and talk about democracy … but we forget how totally radical it was, this notion that we weren't born living under the thumb, under the suppression of a king or a master or a monarch or some kind of higher government authority that inherently had control of us," Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"These guys were writing for the first time – George Mason in his Virginia Declaration of Rights said, no, that's not the case. Our rights are granted to us by God, therefore no institution, no human on earth can take it away."
