Brent Bozell: Lobbying on Proposed Telecom Merger 'Dangerous'

By    |   Tuesday, 08 April 2014 04:05 PM EDT

Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner would give the communications behemoth 40 percent of the Internet service market and 30 percent of the pay-TV market, USA Today reports.

Approval of the deal would also highlight the vast political influence the company has developed through its massive lobbying network.

"This proposed merger with Time Warner would give it one-third of the communications industry in America, which is unheard of for this to happen," Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, told "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"But the way they have done it is by lobbying and by basically buying their way into power, and it is nefarious, it is dangerous, it's deplorable, and frankly, at this point, I'm not quite sure what to do about it," Bozell said Tuesday.

The company has developed its influence in part through aggressive lobbying on Capitol Hill, as well as extensive contributions to a wide network of non-profits and charitable organizations, the New York Times reported in February.

"One report that I saw said that in recent years they've given $1 billion to charity. Now, what charities do these companies support? They don't support a charity out of the blue that they feel wonderful about," Bozell said.

"They will support a charity that is a favorite of a member of Congress who can be moved and who can be lobbied. So, it's another form of lobbying, and everybody knows it goes on in Washington, D.C. You can't track it completely."

Bozell said the Obama administration has also been influenced by Comcast, including through fundraising trips that Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett has taken to Hollywood.

"She's not going out there to play twinkle toes," Bozell said. "She's going out there because Hollywood is the cultural arm of the radical left. So, who does she go to? She goes to [Comcast subsidiary NBC]. Why? Because that's part of the empire and they will do her bidding, they will push Obamacare, they will push gay rights, they will push the issue agenda of this administration."
