Expat Authors: Mexico, Ecuador Offer Bang for the Buck

Friday, 11 April 2014 04:32 PM EDT

For many people, part of the American dream is retiring early to a sunny beachside community. The best way to make that dream a reality, say authors Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher, is to find that beachside community overseas.

Haskins and Prescher, the authors of "The International Living Guide to Retiring Overseas on a Budget," told "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV that places like Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, and Ecuador, where they live, give retirees the most bang for the buck.

"There are probably more expats living full or part time in Mexico than any other country outside of the United States just because it's convenient to get back and forth, and it's surprisingly safe, despite what you hear in the U.S. news cycle," Prescher said.

"Bang for buck, [Ecuador is] one of the best values for dollar propositions in the Western Hemisphere, and we lack for nothing here, as far as amenities go, conveniences, we've really given nothing up," Haskins said.

The authors say they do sometimes get homesick for the United States but that the proximity of their home in Ecuador makes it easy for them to return frequently to the United States for holidays and family events.

They also recommend that retired expats maintain their bank accounts and credit cards with American companies.
