Last week's shooting at Fort Hood, the second mass shooting on the base in five years, brought renewed focus on post traumatic stress disorder and the myriad difficulties U.S. troops face when returning from battle.
The government and private industry must both put a greater focus on helping soldiers transition from the battlefield to the home front, Tim Malloy, a documentary producer who has filmed extensively in war-torn Afghanistan, told John Bachman and J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs "does a good job getting you home, patching you up, drop you off, and then it's your family's issue," Malloy said. "It's a huge cost in homes -- that's what's going to happen here. The military only covers you so far."

Many corporations have made an effort to hire veterans in recent years, but Malloy said that not all soldiers are immediately ready or suited for employment.
"A lot of these people -- all the best intentions in the world -- the real question is, 'yes, you hire them, but are they qualified?'" Malloy asked.
"The military trains you well. But what are you bringing home inside you? That's really the issue."
