The public should understand that those who served in the military have values that they learned during their service that are applicable in civilian life, Navy veteran Tim Murphy told Newsmax on Tuesday.
Murphy, who served eight years as an officer in the Medical Service Corps of the Navy Reserve, told "Wake Up America" that his overall message on Veterans Day is "not just to say thank you, but to honor them by asking what they learned" from serving in the military.
"How do we bring those values that you learned into the workplace? How do we get teamwork, how do you get respect going? How do we understand that the mission comes first in the workplace?" he asked.
Murphy emphasized that "it isn't about our egos, it isn't about complaining that I'm entitled to something more. Boy, complaining was something that never got you anywhere in the military."
Murphy stressed that "what really stands out are the memories of the teamwork — you train together, you fail together, you succeeded together — always pushing that idea that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Everybody contributed something. People came from a wide range of walks of life."
Murphy is also the author of "The Christ Cure," a book that outlines biblical principles for healing.
"I wrote this book to help people who were struggling with tragedy and trauma from PTSD, so I tell a number of stories there of military experiences," he said, pointing out that "when we have a strong faith... our healing can come stronger and better."
