In the midst of a massive bus tour to close out his reelection campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday that outside of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, there is nobody in the country that Democrats want to defeat more than him.
Cruz joined “American Agenda” to discuss how it is that his race against Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, is as close as it is given the state’s solid-red core. Cruz said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., does not want to become minority leader.
“Chuck Schumer has named me his No. 1 target in the country. And Chuck Schumer and George Soros have flooded over $100 million into the state of Texas. They are hammering me,” Cruz said. “Every other ad on TV is an attack ad, and they are trying to flip Texas.
“And it's not complicated. If you are a partisan Democrat, after Donald Trump, there is nobody in the country you want to beat more than me. So they're coming after me. They're trying to beat me,” Cruz added.
Cruz spoke to Newsmax on his way to the Dallas-Fort Worth area with a final event in Houston later Monday to close out a 53-stop bus tour, he said. He’s leaving nothing to chance despite a 4-point lead over Allred, according to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average. Further, Cruz said he’s been left to fend for himself by Senate GOP leadership.
“It's made even worse because Mitch McConnell runs the single largest Republican super PAC in the country, got $400 million. He's spent zero in Texas, even while Chuck Schumer is hammering the living daylights out of Texas. Mitch McConnell won't spend a penny,” Cruz said. “The Washington swamp does not like conservatives who stand and fight.”
