Rep. Steve Russell: Military Cuts Leave Us Vulnerable

By    |   Thursday, 09 Jul 2015 05:54 PM

The Army's plan to cut 40,000 troops over the next two years, in addition to 80,000 already cut, will leave the United States unable to meet international commitments or even adequately defend the country, Oklahoma Rep. Steve Russell tells Newsmax TV.

"It's the lowest point that we have seen in raw numbers since prior to World War II," Russell told "Newsmax Prime" on Thursday. "Percentagewise, it's just staggering and astounding that we would cut trained soldiers that it takes years to bring back on the force."

The cuts make the United States more vulnerable, the retired Army lieutenant colonel said.

"We see that people realize that we're strapped in commitments globally and you have regional players that know that now is the time," he said. "We've seen that with Crimea and Ukraine actions by Russia. We've seen Iran with its rapid proliferation of terror and unrest in the Middle East. We've seen ISIS (Islamic State) uniting themselves with ideologies all across the North African rim."

Russell is a critic of Defense Secretary Ash Carter, saying he and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey have no effective strategy to defeat ISIS.

Carter complains that he can't find people willing to fight, and that's why so few have been trained, Russell said.

"Well, newsflash: There are thousands of people willing to fight," he said. "The problem is that they're in the Kurdish resisting forces or they're Sunni Arabs that are disenfranchised, that do not want to beat ISIS."

America needs a type of federation for the disenfranchised elements to go where they can be armed and equipped, he said.

"I no longer believe, and after years of defending it, I no longer believe that as of January that we can have an accommodated Baghdad government that will have a place for the Sunni Arab and the Kurd to go," he said.
