Bush 43 Media Adviser on Trump: 'Give Him a Shot'

Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show"

Americans freaking out about Donald Trump should "take a deep breath" and give the new president more time on the job before writing him off, the former media adviser to George W. Bush told Newsmax TV.

"I just say, 'Listen – it's not even 100 days yet – let's all take a deep breath and give him a shot,'" Mark McKinnon, co-creator and co-host of Showtime's "The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth" told Tuesday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"He is the elected president of the United States, and I think we should all want him to be successful no matter what our party or positon is, and it doesn't help when everybody's getting hysterical and creating fire where there aren't any."

McKinnon is not surprised that MSNBC's "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough recently said there is something "deeply wrong" with the nation's 45th commander-in-chief.

"I think anything that you're going to see in the mainstream media is going to get hyperventilated about this sort of thing," McKinnon said.

Nor is he startled by the extraordinary media coverage Trump has gotten.

"Nothing surprises me," he told Steve Malzberg. "I've been seeing it for years. I worked for a Republican president, so I'm used to this sort of thing. You just got to sort of know that going in, and that's kind of the media treatment you're going to get.

"But you know Donald Trump has also been pretty adept going around the mainstream media and working other channels. It's a new era; it's a new president; he's using new [techniques] to communicate in his own way."

"It's just so interesting to watch this president, who is so different than any other president we've ever seen. It's always dramatic and surprising because that's what good drama is about, so you don't know how it's going to go."

As well, McKinnon said, people are really paying attention to Trump.

"It doesn't matter if you're a supporter or an opponent, people are just fascinated by what's going on in Washington," he said. "We have this national civics lesson going on because everybody's plugged in."

A new episode of McKinnon's show — described by Showtime as a non-partisan documentary series that "pulls back the curtain on the 2016 presidential race and the Trump administration — airs Sunday.
