John Fund: Both Trump, Senate to Blame for 'Home Alone' WH

National Review columnist John Fund told Newsmax TV on Thursday that both President Donald Trump and the Senate were to blame for the "home alone" administration currently in the White House.

"The fact that we have a 'home alone' administration — there's a lot blame to go around," Fund, the magazine's national affairs columnist, told "Newsmax Now" host John Bachman.

Referencing Trump's cameo appearance in the 1992 movie, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," Fund noted the numerous Cabinet, staff, and judicial vacancies that remain unfilled since Trump's inauguration in January 2017.

"The Senate is clearly stalling," Fund told Bachman. "They're taking 30 hours to debate each nominee, even if it's a district court judge that everyone eventually confirms unanimously.

"That's ridiculous. It's a waste of everyone's time. It slows the process down.

"The Republicans are pushing a bill that would reduce that to eight hours — exactly what the Democrats did in 2013 under Harry Reid," Fund said.

"But the Trump administration should take some of the blame, too.

"For the top 25 percent of the jobs in this administration, the president has not named anyone yet," Fund added.

"He has a presidential personnel office with 17 people working there," he said. "At this point in his administration, Bill Clinton had 90 people working there.

"You can't really process people unless you have enough people there to review their files.

"The FBI background checks have slowed down, probably because of all the controversy surrounding the FBI.

"So, there's enough blame to go around," Fund concluded. "I do think the country is not served by this.

"Trump should appoint more people," he told Bachman. "The Senate shouldn't stall — and the FBI should get its agents to finish the background checks."

On the Senate's confirmation of CIA Director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, on a 57-42 vote, Fund said: "Mike Pompeo was qualified.

"I think the people who voted against his confirmation realize that it was irresponsible to do so, but they could score some cheap political points.

"Both political parties have done that in the past, but in this case, for secretary of state, I hoped that kind of polarization would stop at the water’s edge," Fund said, "but I guess I was wrong."
