Alan Dershowitz: Unions May Trash Trump on SCOTUS Ruling

They helped get President Donald Trump elected president, but now America's labor unions could turn against the commander in chief following Wednesday's landmark ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, renowned civil-rights lawyer Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV.

"It's a decision that will mark the increasing irrelevance of labor unions in America," Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor emeritus, told Wednesday's "America Talks Live." "Unions are becoming far less important than they used to be."

"The interesting thing, of course, is that many may labor unions voted for President Trump, so this might be a decision that many of them object to."

The high court ruled government workers cannot be forced to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining – a decision that deals a serious financial blow to organized labor. The 5-4 decision kills off the so-called fair share fees non-members pay to unions.

Dershowitz said the issue of dues has been argued for years.

"Unions do collectively bargain for all of their members, and the argument on one side was that people who don't want to contribute are getting a free ride – they're getting the benefit of collective bargaining, increased wages, better working conditions, but they're not willing to pay their dues," he said.

"On the other side, they say, 'Well, we're willing to pay our dues but not to use them for political views that we disagree with.' So, this is part and parcel of a developing issue when it comes to taxation.

"People don't want to pay for taxes to go to abortion. When I was a young man, people didn't want to pay their taxes for fighting in the Vietnam War. It's a very complex question. We live in a complex society."
