Bud McFarlane: US Has 'Guaranteed' Iran Becomes a Nuclear Power

By    |   Thursday, 16 Jul 2015 06:46 PM

The United States, by agreeing to a controversial arms pact with Iran, is giving the terror-sponsoring Middle East nation carte blanche to become a nuclear power, says Robert "Bud" McFarlane, former national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan.

"It is very disappointing, far from constraining the Iranian nuclear weapons program, this has guaranteed them an assured way over time to become a nuclear weapons state," McFarlane said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It is just astonishing that our government has reached a point of incompetence to promote this kind of thing as serving a national interest."

Under the historic deal reached by United States and five other world powers to scale back Iran's nuclear program, financial sanctions imposed by the U.S., the European Union and United Nations will be lifted.

In return, Iran is agreeing to lengthy curbs on its nuclear program, which many believe aims at building a nuclear bomb.

McFarlane, a decorated Marine veteran and architect of the Strategic Defense Initiative, said the deal makes "no sense."

"Clearly, the president was looking more for something that served his interest personally [so] that he could describe as a legacy item," McFarlane told Steve Malzberg.

"[It's] an agreement which enhances Iran's ability to become a regional power, to become once more quite robust economically, and facing very little restraint, if any, in continuing their nuclear weapons program. It's just not a coherent way to approach an engagement."

McFarlane said the U.S. should have put a number of concerns on the table before inking any deal.

"Their leading sponsorship of terrorism throughout the region, their animus toward Israel, their ambition to become the dominant Muslim power in the Middle East, and of course their nuclear weapons," he said.

"Bottom line, my goodness, this is a country that acknowledged having killed 500 Americans already and that that policy continues unabated and unaffected by this agreement."
