The White House, with its defense of the nation's economy under President Joe Biden, is "gaslighting" the American public, Rep. Guy Reschenthaler told Newsmax on Sunday.
"I can tell you why we have inflation," the Pennsylvania Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "We pumped too much money into the economy long after COVID was over ... and then at the same time [we were] turning around and declaring war on our energy industry."
The United States was a net energy exporter when former President Donald Trump was in office, Reschenthaler added, but "now we're relying on foreign nations, many of whom are hostile to the United States and the West, for our energy supply."
This has driven up costs for everything from groceries to manufacturing products, leading to more inflation, and the only way to get that under control is to "pass the reasonable, responsible, sensible framework" that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans have proposed with their spending plan, Reschenthaler added.
"We've got to limit government spending," he said. "This plan does that. We've got to save taxpayers money. The plan does that. And we've got to grow the economy, which the plan does because it unleashes American energy."
The REINS Act will also bring government spending under control, said the congressman.
"The path forward is not giving a blank check to government with a clean debt ceiling increase, he said. "That is the wrong approach to get the economy back on track."
Instead, "we need to have a plan that is reasonable, responsible, and sensible," Reschenthaler said. "We have two options. Either, we're going to pass our own bill and force the Senate to act with Joe Biden to negotiate, or we're going to get jammed up the last minute and have to pass a clean debt ceiling increase, which is good for nobody."
He added that later this week, "the House will pass the current plan under the current framework, and then it'll be on [Senate Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer to react. It will be on Joe Biden to crawl back to the negotiating table with Kevin McCarthy. That's what we're looking at."
