Rep. Louie Gohmert told Newsmax TV he is sad the Republican National Convention won’t be taking place.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that it “is not the right time” for the RNC to go on as planned as coronavirus cases continue to surge in the state of Florida.
“I was very sad it was canceled,” the Republican lawmaker from Texas said during a Friday appearance on “National Report.” “I was really looking forward to it.”
He said, “it is a difficult time for all of us when you try to schedule a big event” amid the pandemic.
“When you see things being canceled right and left around us, even baseball not allowing anybody to come to the games, then you do have to look hard,” he said.
While, he said he was looking forward to showing the governor of North Carolina “what he missed out on for his state” he knows that canceling the Jacksonville celebrations had to be done.
Trump had moved portions of the RNC from North Carolina to Jacksonville after the governor wouldn’t flex on allowing crowds to gather during the virus outbreak.
“It’s a tough call,” he said on the decision to cancel, adding especially “when people are as vicious as the president’s opponents are.”
He mentioned Trump’s 2016 rallies and said Democrat leaders paid people to “incite violence” so they could blame Trump. He said people want to “see Republicans fail.”
He suggested that Democrats might “try to infect some Republicans” with the virus if the RNC were to take place.
“You don’t want people ending up being sick and then having Republicans, right before the election, being blamed for spreading the coronavirus,” he said.
