Isaac Chotiner: Americans Offended By 'Smallest Thing'

By    |   Monday, 23 December 2013 06:30 PM EST

Isaac Chotiner, a senior editor of "The New Republic" who wrote a column called "An Atheist's Guide to Christmas," says it's best to play it safe when wishing people a good holiday.

"If you know someone who's not a Christian, they don't celebrate Christmas, then, fine, say 'happy holidays' to them. You know that people can get offended in this country at the smallest thing," Chotiner told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

But he said some people carry separation of church and state too far.

"Some people don't think the 10 Commandments should be in public buildings. Now, I would not choose to spend my time going to court to get the 10 Commandments removed from buildings, but it's at least a reasonable argument," he said.

"If you're talking about people who are just offended by seeing the 10 Commandments posted on private property or something, well, that's absurd."
