As accolades poured in from politicians, pundits and prominent Americans after the passing of President George H.W. Bush, one veteran lawmaker said Monday the 41st commander in chief was especially beloved by the Secret Service, police, and military men and women who protected him and his family.

In an interview on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now," Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said former President Bush was "extremely close to his family, extremely loyal to his friends" — but "people who worked for him who were almost fanatically attached to him."

"Secret Service agents, you talk to police officers, you talk to any of the military personnel . . . and they will tell you he is No. 1," King said. "Each was part of the family — and they never treated them as subservient . . . They absolutely loved [him] and Barbara Bush."

"A great man has passed," King said.
