"The Epic Hand Washing Parody" is doing more than get clicks, it is lathering proper hand washing technique into pop culture thanks to YouTube sensation Peter Hollens.
"I have to do something to do my part, to help," Hollens, a parody singer/songwriter with 2.47 million subscribers, told Friday's "American Agenda" on Newsmax TV.
"I myself was as anxious as everyone else. I saw my own kiddo not be able to wash his hands correctly and you know I thought, 'I can do something about this.'"
Hollens' musical parody, which already has over 377,000 views, is an eclectic medley of pop music, right down to the children's "Baby Shark" phenomenon – "Wash your hands, do do do, do do do, wash your hands."
Hollens and his team made the video to help teach the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's hand washing protocol during the global coronavirus pandemic.
"We so desperately need levity right now, and I think showing proper hand washing technique, I myself learned how to do better, watching the CDC's best practices on this," Hollens added. "So, gotta make hand washing fun, and I think it's gonna help a lot of people."
Viewers of his YouTube channel are donating to GlobalGiving.org's coronavirus relief fund, and all the proceeds from online streaming of the video go to the cause as well, Hollens said. The relief fund has raised almost $1 million as of Friday afternoon.
"Honestly, the goal was to just pick songs that are earworms that people adore so that we can literally get into their mind subconsciously and show all the techniques to get into the thumbs, the back of the hands, because we gotta stay clean so we can fight this thing – protect the people that can't protect themselves."
