Pete Hoekstra: Pakistani Government Coddled Taliban for Years

By    |   Thursday, 18 Dec 2014 11:35 AM

Remarks by former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf that the evolution of the Taliban in Pakistan is America’s fault is an "outrageous statement," former House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra said Thursday on Newsmax TV's "America’s Forum."

"The Pakistani government, elements of their intelligence service, for years have been coddling up to the Taliban," Hoekstra said. "They fostered and provided them with the safe haven in the ungoverned areas of Pakistan, crossing into the border of Afghanistan. They have a whole lot more to do with the development in the growth of the Taliban. The new government in Pakistan has started taking steps against the Taliban, something that Perez Musharraf never did."

"The new government is degrading the Taliban and that's why the Taliban retaliated and went after a soft target. We're now starting to see the real face of the Taliban and ISIS as they become more radicalized. It's not America's fault."

Hoekstra also weighed in on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech Wednesday in which he promised the Russian people that the economy there will diversify its assets beyond oil and gas, while insisting that the West is trying to destroy Russia to grab Siberia's great natural resources.

"I don't think President Vladimir Putin anticipated a 40 percent collapse in the price of oil, but his strategy has been a continued confrontation with the west; telling the Russian people that whatever economic problems they may have are a result of outside influence and outsiders attacking Russia," said Hoekstra. "He wants to try to re-create the big Russia that existed before. He sees a vacuum where that can happen."

Putin saying he’s ready to mediate the Ukraine crisis is also a diversionary tactic, according to Hoekstra.

"This is a soft expression to the Russian people, saying 'we're willing to work with the West,' " Hoekstra said. "In reality, I don't believe a word of it. Some would say there may be some substance because he wants to negotiate so that he can ease the burden on the Russian people. He's not ready to mediate or negotiate. He's going to continue down this track and he's going to keep Russia going down that track as long as he's in power."
