Richard Wolffe: Obama Has to 'Speak for the Nation'

By    |   Tuesday, 17 September 2013 05:12 PM EDT

Barack Obama outmaneuvered Mitt Romney by using his campaign money more efficiently, according to Richard Wolffe, executive editor of MSNBC.com and author of the book "The Message: The Reselling of President Obama."

"Romney and his allies had more money than [Obama] did," Wolffe told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"No one could predict that Obama's people would be smarter about how to spend the money. They found these obscure cable shows in the middle of the night that could reach infrequent voters.

"And the Romney people were just spending their money like there was no tomorrow."

Wolffe said his book details how Romney ran a "disastrous" campaign and "just wasn't credible" to most people.

But Obama has made some missteps, including attacking Republicans over a possible government shutdown during his press conference about the Washington Navy Yard shootings on Monday, he added.

"Presidents at a time of one of these horrific massacres have to strike a different tone. They have to speak for the nation," Wolffe said.
