Bill O'Reilly: 'Grossly Irresponsible' Anti-Trump Rhetoric Killed NY Daily News

Bill O'Reilly: 'Grossly Irresponsible' Anti-Trump Rhetoric Killed NY Daily News

Monday, 30 July 2018 06:05 PM EDT

Bill O'Reilly says there is a reason the N.Y. Daily News is teetering on the brink: Readers are fed up with its nonstop bashing of President Donald Trump.

"The N.Y. Daily News here where I am in Manhattan is going out of business because it is grossly irresponsible," O'Reilly, a veteran broadcaster bestselling author told Newsmax TV's Wayne Allyn Root on Monday. "[It] lied almost every day in its news coverage.

"And New Yorkers — basically liberal here — said 'you know what? I'm not going to bother with this.' And so they're out. And that's going to continue to happen now."

Last week, the Daily News' parent company Tronc cut at least half the 99-year-old newspaper's staff, leaving it with a skeleton staff and prompting media watchers to fear it is on its last legs. Over the past year, the Daily News has torn into Trump on the front page, even portraying him as a circus clown.

"As far as President Trump is concerned he's fighting . . . fire with fire," O'Reilly said. "Sorry to use a cliché, but it's the most vivid one I can give you. He says, 'alright you're going to try to remove me from office, you, the press, I'm going to fight you, and I'm going to incite the people against you,' and he is."

He also branded The New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger as "hypocritical" for warning Trump his attacks on the media were "increasingly dangerous" during a private meeting the two had July 20 at the White House.

"It's certainly possible the president of the United States saying that press people are the enemy of the people could incite some nut to do something violent against a journalist – that's possible," O'Reilly told Root.

"But The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, and the network news, have all taken it upon themselves to remove Donald Trump from office. There's no doubt about it. You can prove it, you can see it, it's tangible.

"So, the publisher of The New York Times is basically allowing that newspaper to be so 'hate Trump-centric' that it is unprecedented in this republic – then has the temerity to go in and say, 'oh, you're criticizing us too harshly.' I mean, doesn't that ring a little phony to me."

He added, when Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said earlier this month those who do not support Trump should confront and harass his staff, "where was Sulzberger with an editorial against that?

"So, this selective outrage. It's just another brick in the wall, as Pink Floyd once sang, against the press."

O’Reilly is the author of "Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence," written with Martin Dugard and published by Henry Holt.
