Ex-Sen. LeMieux: Tough for De Blasio to Put 'Genie Back in Bottle'

By    |   Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 12:33 PM

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will have a tough time putting the "genie back in the bottle" by trying to appear supportive of the city's police department after the criticisms he's voiced about their policies, former Republican Florida Sen. George LeMieux said Tuesday on Newsmax TV.

De Blasio "caused some of this problem" after running a campaign and governing while keeping law enforcement at arm's length, LeMieux told "America's Forum."

"When he ran for office, he in some ways ran against the police department," LeMieux said. "Now, he has the problem of trying to put the genie back in the bottle."

Another problem for de Blasio in moving New York beyond the murder of two of the city's policemen Saturday was his "buddy" relationship with a "professional protester," the civil rights activist Al Sharpton, LeMieux said.

Sharpton "profits off protesting. It's who he is, and it is his image," he said. "De Blasio needs to draw down on this supposed friendship with Sharpton and tell him to stand down until after these funerals, and let everybody take a breath."

LeMieux said it wasn't necessary for President Barack Obama to "insert himself every time there's a death" and speak on the fallen officers, because he had a tendency to turn an incident into "more of a polarized discussion."

The rhetoric and protest over policing activities should pause in order to "let the families mourn and grieve, just like we do with military folks who have died," LeMieux said.
