Rep. Mo Brooks: Trump Attacks Show Freedom Caucus Has Earned 'Respect'

President Donald Trump's declaration of war on the House Freedom Caucus for killing the American Health Care Act (AHCA) is actually a positive for the hardline ultraconservative group, one of its leading members, Rep. Mo Brooks, tells Newsmax TV.

"In a way, it's kind of cool. Previously the Freedom Caucus was not given much respect," Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said Friday to Bill Tucker, who is filling in for Steve Malzberg on "America Talks Live."

"We're the ones who were trying to get the Republicans and the House of Representatives in the United States Senate to keep our promises... so, to finally get recognition from the White House is a good thing."

Still, Brooks added, he wishes Trump had reacted differently.

"I wish the president was not upset because he is on the opposite side of us on legislation… [he] apparently supports that only has 17 percent approval of the American people and that expands over time, socialism in the United States of America, where free enterprise is undercut," Brooks said.

"Free enterprise is what has made America the power house that it is. Free enterprise is what has given us the wealth that we enjoy, whether it be for our schools or for our healthcare, our roads, or for just a simple ability to take care of ourselves and our families.

"Socialism undermines it as evidenced by what's happening in Venezuela right now. They experimented with socialism and they are paying a heavy, heavy price … [the] inflation rate this year is 2,200 percent … you experiment with socialism and you end up bankrupting your country. Yet in Washington, D.C., we keep doing it."

Last Friday in an eleventh-hour move, the House yanked a vote on the AHCA, which it hoped would replace the Affordable Care Act, after it was determined it couldn't pass thanks to Freedom Caucus members.

Brooks said he still believes that a full repeal of former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare act is the only way to go forward, not by way of the AHCA, which would have kept parts of the Affordable Care Act in place.

"We promised the American people that we were going to repeal Obamacare. We did not promise the American people that we were going to be deceptive and replace Obamacare with yet another big government socialist welfare program," he told Tucker.

"American families who over the years have been self-sufficient in paying their own way … [are] getting hammered by these premium increases associated with all of the mandates that are inside the bowels of the Obamacare program.

"So those are the two reasons why I believe that we need to do what we say we were going to do and that is repeal Obamacare and I'm sticking to my guns."
