Consultant: Campaign Finance Laws Led to Ugly Miss. Primary

Six-term Sen. Thad Cochran and state Sen. Chris McDaniel face-off Tuesday in a Republican primary runoff election in what has been deemed the nation's ugliest primary, for which Mississippi based political consultant Amile Wilson blames the current campaign finance laws.

"What made it dirty, and I think this is emblematic of where campaign finance reform and third party expenditures are taking us, since you can't coordinate, you can't talk about candidates you're supporting — all of these third parties on both sides are limited only to contrasting ads and things like that," Wilson told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"It creates a negative environment," he explained.

"The problem is when you have millions of dollars pouring in from both sides, this can really drown out any hard news reporting," Wilson added. "All the voter is hearing is the hyperbole from both sides."

The Mississippi-based political consultant from Hapax Creative said the race in the Magnolia State has felt "like two giants just bashing each other over the head repeatedly."

Which he argues has "been divisive amongst the party."
