Rep. Mike Kelly: Obama's Sony Hack Response 'Stunning'

Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:21 PM

President Barack Obama's response to the Sony hacking scandal shows "the depths that this president has sunk into as leader of the free world," Rep. Mike Kelly says.

"It's stunning," Kelly, a Pennsylvania Republican, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He tells Sony they should stand up to these people that are trying to do something and by the same token, we turn around and grant [Cuba], a country that for 55 years has been one of the greatest oppressors of personal freedom and liberty … a deal.

"I don't think any clear-thinking American looks at this and thinks this is the leader of the free world … I've never seen anything that [shows] such a lack of leadership and a lack of courage."

Obama has said Sony Pictures had erred in cancelling the Christmas Day release of the Seth Rogen comedy "The Interview — in which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is assassinated.

Sony made the decision after a group called Guardians of Peace hacked Sony's computer system and released confidential emails, salaries and business strategies, and warned the studio to yank the movie or face more embarrassing leaks and possible attacks on theaters.

"We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States. If somebody is able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they see a documentary they don’t like, or news reports they don’t like," Obama said.

Sony has since reversed its decision, saying it will release the film, — rated R for pervasive language, crude and sexual humor, nudity, some drug use and bloody violence — in selected theaters.

Kelly, a member of the Ways and Means Committee, said he doubts the president will have the support to get the Cuba deal authorized next year by the Republican-controlled House and Senate.

"A Republican-led Congress in both the House of Representatives and the Senate will continue to fight against a president who always doesn't revolve around the Constitution," Kelly said.

"He for years has said he can't do end runs, he's a law enforcer, not a lawmaker, and then he turns around and does his piece on immigration.

"Now, he's done this piece on the Cuban situation and you look at him and say you just told us you can't do those things and yet, you've done it again … He always waits until Congress is out of session or is no longer in town and he makes his move. It's stunning."
