Michael Reagan: Obama 'Always Plays the Race Card'

By    |   Friday, 12 Dec 2014 12:14 PM

In an effort to figure out his legacy, President Barack Obama panders to race baiters rather than the country as a whole, according to political commentator Michael Reagan, who appeared Friday on Newsmax TV’s “America’s Forum.”

“The president of the United States is still searching and looking for his legacy because he doesn't know what it's going to be, so he keeps on jumping from issue to issue,” Reagan said.

“But it's interesting to watch him on this issue of race. He always plays the race card. He sees himself only as a black man. He seems himself more as a black man than he sees himself as president of the United States of America and that's what's truly unfortunate because he sees it only through those eyes and therefore he plays into the Al Sharpton organization, he plays into Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan and so on and so forth.”

The result, according to Reagan, son of President Ronald Reagan, is a deterioration in race relations.

He questioned the silence when Kelly Thomas, an unarmed mentally ill homeless California man, who was white, was beaten to death by three police officers in 2011. The incident was recorded on video but the officers were acquitted at a trial.

“It's not about race, maybe it's about bad cops because we've lowered the standards with people we've hired into that business,” said Reagan.

As long as there's money to keep the race issue alive, it will never get better, he added.

“We can get better as a people, but when you've got people who make a living by race-baiting, you're always going to have the race issue because if you solve it, then you really put Al Sharpton out of a job and Al Sharpton doesn't want to lose his job,” he said. “Jesse Jackson doesn't want to lose his job. Louis Farrakhan doesn't want to lose his job. So you have your race-baiters and it's all about money and as long as there's money in it, big money in it, you're never going to solve it at that level.”

The media also plays a role, he said, airing looping images of black people rioting, looting and killing.

“It causes people to be racist now that maybe were not racist before,” he suggested.
