March for Life Director: No Taxpayer Abortion Bill Key

By    |   Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:45 PM EST

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which passed the House on Thursday is a "very important and good" move by House Republicans, says Jeanne Monahan, director of the March for Life.

"There was a poll that actually that came out today that shows that 85 percent of Americans are opposed to taxpayer funding of abortion, and at the March for Life we've long been opposed to that, and have gone on the record about it," Monahan told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

However, the vote on the measure came after GOP leaders abandoned another abortion bill that is aimed at curtailing more late-term abortions, due to a lack of votes, after several Republican female lawmakers said they wouldn't support it.

Monahan said that the March for Life members "were enormously disappointed with what happened . . . but we're still being assured by House leadership and also by [South Carolina Sen. Lindsey] Graham, who's the sponsor on the Senate side that they're committed to continuing to work on this and to bring it forward for a vote sometime in this Congress."

March for Life is hosting its annual march on Washington Thursday, which is a protest against the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wage decision in 1973, which legalized abortion.

The director of March for Life says that she's impressed with the number of "young people" who are attending the event, and that according to polls "young people are actually increasingly pro-life."

"I can remember the head of NARAL Pro-Choice America stepping down two years ago because she conceded that they couldn't recruit young people, and referring to the march, she said there are just so many young people," Monahan explained.

"She thought that their marketing was off, but it's really that their product is flawed," she contends.

"Young people are clear on the truth, and they're clear on life, and that it's the human rights issue of today," she added.
