The terms "Republican" and "conservative" are often used in the media interchangeably, but "Republican" refers to a political party while "conservative" refers to a multifaceted, heterogeneous political movement, says Mallory Factor, author of a book on conservatism.
"If you listen to the lamestream, mainstream media . . . what you hear is that conservatives are racist, sexist, xenophobes, homophobes, they're for economic inequality, and they're for militarism," Factor, author of a collection of essays about the nuances of the conservative movement called
"The Big Tent," told "America's Forum on Newsmax TV.
"The fact is there are four overriding concepts that you see in "Big Tent," and you understand really what is conservative if you read 'Big Tent,' he said Wednesday.
"The first concept is respect for wisdom and tradition of past generations. The second is maintenance of the rule of law. The third is protection of individual freedoms and liberty, and the fourth is a belief in a higher law above man's law. That's the conservative movement."
