Rep. Gohmert: McCain Is a War Hero - But Wrong on 'So Many Things' as Senator

By    |   Monday, 20 July 2015 04:56 PM

Rep. Louie Gohmert says Sen. John McCain absolutely deserves to be called a war hero for his service in Vietnam — but as a lawmaker his record is a disaster.

"As far as Sen. McCain, I have nothing but respect and great sympathy for the pain and suffering he endured … but that doesn't mean that you get to become a senator and ruin the country," Gohmert said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It may give you a chance to be a senator but once you're there, your merits have to stand on their own. In recent years he's been pro-amnesty, he's been wrong on so many things.

"He's been saying, 'Well gee if we had bombed in Syria when I said we should have, we wouldn't be in this mess.' No, it'd be worse, because he wanted to bomb Assad which would've meant we'd turned Syria over to ISIS."

Gohmert's comments come in the wake of the uproar over Donald Trump's comments about the war record of McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner in North Vietnam.

Last week, the billionaire developer, who is seeking the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, said McCain is "not a war hero." The billionaire developer added: "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

McCain, an Arizona Republican, said Trump should say he's sorry to all veterans who've been prisoners of war. As well, many Republicans have demand he apologize.

Gohmert, vice chair of House Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security Committee, told Steve Malzberg that Trump will regret his controversial comments.

"He's bound to be sorry that he said it. It's not accurate because some of our most valued people have been captured."

But he added that Trump must make up his own mind as to whether he wants to apologize.

"I'm not going to be the auditor. Whether he owes McCain an apology, he said he is a war hero enough times to make up for what he said," Gohmert said.

"On the issue of other [veterans], yeah, he can say, 'Look I'm sorry I didn't mean to disparage anybody that's ever been captured and I'm sorry I said it.' You know it would be easy to do, but that ought to be the end of it."
