Kudlow: Hillary's Explanation Is Like 'The Dog Ate My Homework'

Hillary Clinton's email mea culpa on Tuesday was not satisfactory, but it's "as close to an apology as you're ever going to get," renowned economist and CNBC senior contributor Larry Kudlow says.

"[It's like] the dog ate my homework, 'I really gave you all the government stuff and the personal stuff, unfortunately, I'd love to give it to you, but I already deleted it, so you just have to trust me,'" Kudlow told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That's as close to an apology as you're ever going to get."

The former secretary of state is under fire for using a private email account and home server for official business, sparking worries that some government secrets could have been hacked and that she hid some correspondence.

At a news conference at the United Nations, Clinton admitted it would have been better to have used a government email account and a separate mobile device, but insisted she had followed the law.

"What she glossed over … [is] she violated White House rules … she violated State Department rules," Kudlow said.

"She claims she didn't, but from what I've read and seen, the State Department had very clear rules, at least in 2010 …

"This is a potential president. She was risking security threats, hacking threats because of this homemade server upon which her personal account was based. She claims the secret service was monitoring this. We have no idea because the stuff is gone."

Kudlow believes the scandal speaks to Clinton's judgment.

"This is a matter of presidential judgment and wisdom. She's jeopardizing our national security and she should've thought of that," he said.

In addition, according to Kudlow, the 55,000 emails Clinton has released are nowhere near enough. "I don't know how many more exist and I don't know what's in the rest of it and she's not going to let a third party independent council take a look at it," he said.

"We may never know or maybe somehow we will know because there's no such thing as a deleted email. It's out there. It's in the clouds someplace. We're going to have to find out ...

"If she says it's about convenience, I don't buy that. There was a greater motive than just convenience."
