John Sununu to Newsmax TV: 'GM Making Horrible Mistake'

(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

General Motors' decision to close four factories in the U.S. and cut more than 14,000 jobs could be partially politically driven, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu told Newsmax TV.

Sununu was asked about GM's plans during an appearance on Wednesday's "Newsmax Now."

"Mary Barra is chairman and CEO of GM," Sununu said. "She's the one Hillary Clinton was wooing at one point to be vice president on her ticket, so she clearly is not a Trump fan.

"I suspect there's an ingredient of rubbing President Trump's nose in this, as well as Mary Barra trying to squeeze the last penny out of the production profit instead of understanding that it's better to produce cars here and keep American jobs than to help fuel the Chinese economy with production over there."

Sununu added that GM's announcement is bad timing, since the Trump administration is negotiating with China to even the global trading field. China has yet to budge on dropping tariffs, which has resulted in a trade war of sorts between the two countries.

"The timing is horrible," Sununu said. "Mary Barra is feeding the Chinese good news at a time when we should be putting pressure on them. And so I think GM is making a horrible mistake. I don't see a real problem with the federal government trying to put a little pressure on, but it can't go too far."
